Geologic maps and categories (themes):
|
Each map is coded as one or more of the main types of map
(i.e. bedrock, surficial, engineering geology, derivative, or generalized).
For example, a comprehensive geologic map would probably be coded as both "Bedrock"
and "Surficial" as the main type of map.
Maps containing additional information or information about a particular theme of
those options listed below are coded for those items. For example, a bedrock geologic
map which contained information on prospects and geochemical data would be coded as
"Bedrock", "Metal, lode", and "Geochemistry".
Information about the items contained in each category are listed below. Note
that many of these maps were categorized by several different people over a period
of more than a year. Ideas about what the categories should be changed as the project
evolved. Categorization of the DGGS maps included here will be improved upon as the
project goes on. If you see any items that are incorrectly coded or for general
comments on the classification and data, please contact us.

Main type(s) of map:
|
|
Bedrock:
Generally includes maps labeled "Bedrock", "Comprehensive", or
"Geologic Map". Each map was opened though to see whether it really did include
bedrock detail. Some of the maps labeled in this manner were categorized as "generalized".
Surficial:
Generally includes maps labeled "Surficial", "Comprehensive", or "Geologic Map".
Each map was opened though to see whether it really did include surficial detail. Some of
the maps labeled in this manner were categorized as "generalized".
Engineering Geology:
Includes maps titled "Engineering Geology", "geologic material maps",
and "slope stability maps". Also includes maps that have tables showing properties of the
materials. May in the future include items marked "Construction" here. Currently those
were included only under the "Resources, non-metals" category.
Generalized:
Includes generalized and reconnaissance maps. These maps are generally
not coded in bedrock or surficial also. This was done as an attempt to be able to portray
which areas had been mapped in more detail.
Derivative:
Includes maps produced from geologic maps, such as terrane, hazard maps,
etc. Most were derived from surficial or engineering geology maps.

Categories (themes) associated with the maps:
|
|
Resources
|
Metals, lodes: Largely contains items with information and/or location of
prospects or lodes.
Metals, placers: Contains items with mapped tailings or other placer information.
Not thought to be currently complete.
Non-metals: Currently includes items that were coded as "construction" and
"sand and gravel". Thorough inclusion of industrial minerals is not currently complete.
Geothermal: Several geothermal publications still need to be included in
this dataset. |
|
Hazards
|
Hazards were categorized as "Permafrost" or "Hazards" in our initial classification.
These map classifications will be revised to fit the final categories.
Permafrost: More items are currently coded as permafrost than probably
should be.
Landslide: Category has many "gray" areas as maps can range from
a "Hazards map" to a map with a few old landslide deposits. Currently, fewer
items are probably coded here than should be.
Other: The "Hazards, Other" category contains all other items marked as hazards. Many of
these will be reclassified to volcanic, seismic, and/or landslide as appropriate.
Avalanche and tsunami will remain as other.
|
|
Other
|
Geochemistry: Includes geologic maps that have whole rock,
trace-element, stream sediment, mineral, or other chemical composition.
Geochronology:
Includes items with radiometric dates. Some items may be incorrectly marked as
geochronology when it should have been paleontology. Will be corrected.
Paleontology: Includes items with paleontologic data.
